Oil Spill

Full size graphic

This graphic uses information found at the Deepwater Horizon response site. The graphic’s intention is to show, over time, how much oil/oil-water mix has been recovered or contained and when each process was started. It also shows how much has spilled to date compared with the containment efforts. Originally published July 11, 2010.

This graphic uses information found at the Deepwater Horizon response site. The idea behind this graphic was to show the difference between the beginning and current amount of personnel work involved in assisting with the oil spill. I used the typical “bathroom door silhouette” style to show the difference in amount between the two.

The chart to the right shows the total number of personnel workers responding from when the information was first published up until the last record was made. Originally published June 27, 2010.

I took the data found at the International Bird Rescue website and created this DATA FILE for Sunday’s The Times-Picayune out of it. It shows the percentage of animals collected around or in the Gulf of Mexico (data are totals from in the water, Texas, La., Miss., Ala. and Fla.) that have oil visible on them. Originally published June 20, 2010.

Done for The Times-Picayune for May 14, 2010 print edition. This graphic shows the 2009 tracked path of a bluefin tuna as it makes it way around the Gulf of Mexico. A fun graphic to put together as I always enjoy doing maps with extra stuff to them that pointing out a location. Originally published May 14, 2010.

The above graphic was for The Times-Picayune on April 27, five days after Deepwater Horizon sunk into the Gulf of Mexico and seven days after it caught fire. The graphic I put together sucks, because at this point, source material was scarce. This was pretty much the first graphic of its kind. I was going off of reports alone, almost no visuals at all. Made the job that evening difficult, but the goal was to give readers an idea of what happened. Originally published April 27, 2010.
